A canal landmark at the eastern entrance to the historic downtown has received a boost to its planned redevelopment.
Tammy Eallonardo, director of the Economic Development Alliance of Southern Ohio, gave an advance media release Tuesday.
Two groups focusing on the former atomic plant near Piketon were in Chillicothe December 7th to present $130,000 in grant support to the “Ohio Erie Development Company Ltd.”
That company has plans to redevelop the large 1850s and 1860s Emmitt canal warehouse at the northeast corner of East Main and North Mulberry streets in Chillicothe.
The three-phase, $8,000,000 development project will turn the building into “Preservation Hall.”
Eallonardo wrote that “the grant received from Fluor BWXT, the contractor responsible for the decontamination and decommissioning efforts at the Portsmouth DOE site, is critical to the timely redevelopment of the canal-era, 40,000 square-foot structure.”
The JEDISO Partnership – the Joint Economic Development Initiative of Southern Ohio – partnered in the grant and its presentation.
Eallonardo wrote that Fluor BWXT should make a further media release Wednesday morning. Eallonardo is also hosting the Annual Celebration Breakfast at that time for “Greater Chillicothe & Ross County, Ohio Development,” one of the interrelated local development agencies she heads.
