One man died after a two-vehicle fatal crash in Jackson County Friday. The Jackson Post of the Highway Patrol reported the crash on the State Route 124, south of Wellston, near Mile Post 19 in Jackson County.
At about 1:17pm Friday, an eastbound 2006 International trash truck was stopped on SR-124 performing its function. 89-year-old Samual Howell of Wellson was eastbound in a 2003 Chrysler Town and County when he failed to maintain assured clear distance ahead and struck the trash truck in the rear.
Howell was transported to Holzer Medical Center by Jackson County Emergency Medical Services, where he succumbed to his injuries.
The operator of the trash truck, 38-year-old Steven Lawson of Otway, was transported to Holzer Medical Center by his employer with minor injuries.
The highway was closed about three hours while the crash was being investigated. Agencies on scene were Wellston Fire Department, Jackson County Emergency Medical Services, and Jackson County Ohio Department of Transportation.
The crash remains under investigation.
