The Pump House Center for the Arts had their second opening for a show, as part of an experiment in letting visitors pay for the "People's Choice" awards in photography. Director John Payne mentioned that selling tickets for votes has paid for the award ribbons four times over...as well as the electric bill for the month.
Jared Mitten won first place in landscapes, for his long exposure of a wagon in nighttime Utah. He said he experimented to get the right exposure, but knew he couldn't go past about 20 seconds. (The rotation of the earth would cause the stars to leave curved trails.) He also "painted" the wagon with a flashlight to give it the proper exposure.
Hannah Mustard won first place in animals with a spontaneous portrait of her cat, Frankie, who she said leapt into a pose while she had food. Her other winner was a second place landscape from her native Pike County.
Sixteen photos won ribbons in the show that closes in a week (May 28th).
"Celebrating Artists of Color" will open June 2nd. Learn more on the Pump House's new Facebook page.
