Despite it being their first time on the gym in 10 days due to COVID quarantine and missing two starters, the Huntington Huntsmen treated their senior players and cheerleaders to their second win of the season in a 39-34 decision over Portsmouth Clay, Tuesday night.
The Huntsmen held leads off 11-8 after one quarter and 22-17 at halftime, but a 22-13 lead late in the second quarter vanished as the Clay Panthers went on a 13-0 run that extended from late first half into the third period where Clay grabbed a 26-22 advantage.
By the end of the third period, Huntingtonm had tied the score at 26-26 and trailed only one last time at 29-28 where they grabbed the lead for good and held on to improve to (2-14) on the season while Clay dropped to (3-12).
Huntington was led by 6'2 sophomore Dalton Black's 10 points and 6 rebounds, followed by Dalton Haubeil's 9 points and 6 from Seth McCloskey. Senior Gavin Free had 5 points and 10 rebounds, Luke Lewis added 5 points and 4 from senior Darius Brown.
Clay was led by Shaden Malone's 17 points.
Huntington shot 14/37 from the field for 38%- including 2/10 from the arc and 9/15 from the charity stripe. Clay was 13/35 for 37%- including 2/10 from the arc. They were 6/13 from the foul line.
Huntington committed 16 turnovers to 14 for Clay, but the Huntsmen won the rebounding battle 25-22.
