Chillicothe Cancels July 4th Fireworks, Hears of Income Woes

Chillicothe Council hesitated to make a large appropriation, and heard about continuing income woes Monday night.

Council held off on committing almost $150,000 to plan a new west-side fire station...instead, with Tara Gillum mocving to commit the legislation to put it on hold.

Mayor Luke Feeney said he was ok with the hesitation, but told council they would find the funds have been saved up by Fire Chief Jeff Creed...who will be retiring this year.

Council also appropriated $31,000 on first reading to install two electric vehicle charging stations in the Water Street downtown parking lot, after hearing from Devon Shoemaker that AEP will reimburse the city quickly.

And Auditor Krystal Spetnagel cautioned that the city income tax revenue is lagging behind the unemployment rate, and that city revenue from the hotel tax and gas tax will also be hurt.

Mayor Luke Feeney listed the cost-saving items that were announced in a city news release Monday afternoon, including keeping the city pool closed...but added canceling the city’s July 4th fireworks.

Live video on Facebook was glitchy and may not have recorded, and electrical problems in council chambers prevented the video broadcast on local cable...as well as air conditioning for Council President Bruce Arnold, as he coordinated the Zoom internet video session.
