Canal Winchester Edges Cavs on Last Second Three

For the second year in a row Canal Winchester hit a three point shot in the final seconds to knock off Chillicothe. This year the Cavs led by a point on two clutch free throws by Jayvon Maughmer with 25 seconds left in the game.

.

The Indians couldn’t find a final shot until they drove the lane and kicked the ball to the corner to their big man Bilas Sow. Sow (6’5”)was 0-8 on long range shots, but hit the corner three with just 3 seconds left in the game. Sow’s trifecta put CW up 56-54.

.

The Cavaliers, with just three seconds and a full court to navigate, wound up turning the ball over and two final Indian foul shots produced a 58-54 final.

.

Chillicothe built an 11 point halftime lead behind 14 of 24 shooting and 12 Brandon Noel points. Canal charged back in the third quarter with basket penetration and 9 of 14 shooting to out score Chillicothe 20-10 to be within one headed to the final eight minutes.

.

The last quarter was back and forth with the lead changing hands three times in the final two minutes until Maughmer’s free throws put the Cavs up 54-53 with 25.8 seconds left.

.

Chillicothe shot over 50% on the night, but as happened with their other recent losses to D 1 schools, the three point line was a problem with the Cavs going 2 of 12 on three point shots.

.

Shooting percentages were similar as CW was also 2-12 on three pointers and the Indians shooting just under 50% from the floor. Rebounds were 24-20 in favor of Chillicothe while maybe the biggest Indian advantage was only 5 turnovers to 12 for Chillicothe.

.

Jayvon Maughmer lead the Cavaliers going to the bucket for 19 points. Noel added only three in the second half to wind up with 15. Tre Beard added 9.

.

The Indians had great balance with their seven seniors with Sow scoring 11 to go with his game winner. Canal’s second half surge was led by Tre Von Robinson off the bench. Robinson’s quickness to the basket was clutch as he scored 13 points to lead the win.

.

Chillicothe lost their third straight game to a fellow Central District D One school in the past 8 days. The Cavs (13-4) (7-0) travel to McClain Friday to try and stay undefeated in FAC play. Canal Winchester is now (11-4).
