Chillicothe Police Department is reporting statistics that indicate they took a "bite out of crime" last year.

Chief Keith Washburn says serious crimes like homicide and rape were drastically down, although the drug addiction problem kept thefts and robberies up.

Washburn believes a greater police presence is among the things that is making the difference in driving down serious crime and can help curtail more thefts. The chief says they are talking with area store management about allowing the police to be allowed to have more of a visible presence to help cut retail thefts.

Washburn says they have also been successful in getting more people into drug treatment.
