CHS Great John Herrnstein Dies

One of Ross County’s all-time athletic greats, has died. John Herrnstein passed away Tuesday. He was 79-years-old.

John was an All Ohioan in football, baseball, basketball and track at Chillicothe High School, graduating in 1955. He went on to Star in football at the University of Michigan, before playing baseball with the Philadelphia Phillies for 7 years. He also was in the Braves and Cubs organizations. 

Herrnstein was a charter member of the Chillicothe High School Athletic Hall of Fame inducted in february of 1993. He was also instrumental in campaigning for the current city school district building projects and The Obadiah Harris Family Athletic Complex.

Herrnstein spent most of his post-pro sports career in financing, before retiring in 2011. He also volunteered for many community organizations. Funeral arrangements are through Ware Funeral Home.
