Ross Grand Jury, February 16th: Domestic Violence Against Wife and Daughter

The Ross County Grand Jury returned all 18 of their cases Friday, February 16th, 2024, with three open for release to the public. In one of the cases, from testimony in the the grand jury, according to the Ross County Prosecutor’s Office:

On December 4th, Ross County Sheriff’s deputies were dispatched to the 300 block of East Hydell Road in reference to domestic violence.

They found no one in a mobile home at the address, where 46-year-old Jeffrey Stewart lives with his wife and children. They found family members in a house there, where Stewart’s mother lives.

A 15-year-old juvenile victim there said she had been at home in the trailer with her father, Stewart; his wife, the victim’s stepmom; and younger siblings of the victim. She told deputies that her father and stepmom began arguing, until her stepmom decided to leave the place with the younger children.

The girl said that as her stepmom was trying to leave in a car, Stewart grabbed his wife by the hair and tried to pull her out. The girl came out of the house, yelling at Stewart to the effect ‘if you’re going to take your anger out on anyone, take it out on me.’ Stewart then chased after her while his wife dove away with the other children.

Stewart caught his daughter, put her in a chokehold, grabbed her by the jacket, and started to choke her again. But she made it to her grandmother’s residence, and Stewart’s mother fought off Stewart and got the girl into the house.

For Stewart’s indictments on:

  • Fourth degree felony strangulation of his daughter
  • First degree misdemeanor domestic violence against his wife
  • And another first degree misdemeanor domestic violence against his daughter

He could get up to two and a half years and $7,000 in fines.
