President Trump Weighs In On Pledge Of Allegiance Controversy

American Leader With Hand On Heart

A controversial decision by the city council in St. Louis Park, Minnesota has caught the attention of President Donald Trump. Council members recently voted unanimously to stop reciting the Pledge of Allegiance before council meetings. The vote was made with no input from local residents, and many of them voiced their displeasure during a meeting on Monday (July 8) night. A reporter from KSTP was at the meeting, where numerous people spoke out against the decision.

"I'm proud to be an American now, and I just don't find anything in the Pledge of Allegiance offensive," Kathleen Bryan told the council.

A couple of council members appeared to walk back their votes and admitted that nixing the Pledge of Allegiance may have been a mistake.

"As a proud American, I'm appalled that our little suburban community's meeting protocols have sparked this polarizing conversation," said City Council Member Anne Mavity.

On Thursday, President Trump joined in on the debate, warning on Twitter that the pledge is "under siege." He wrote that "people are sick and tired of this stupidity" and claimed that he will win the state of Minnesota in the 2020 presidential election.

The Pledge of Allegiance to our great Country, in St. Louis Park, Minnesota, is under siege. That is why I am going to win the Great State of Minnesota in the 2020 Election. People are sick and tired of this stupidity and disloyalty to our wonderful USA!

After hearing from residents on Monday, the council decided to hold another session on the issue, but has not set a date for that meeting.

"The mayor and council are aware of the President’s tweet and are focused on the work of the city," Jacque Smith, Communications and Marketing Manager for City Council, told ABC News. "At its July 8, 2019, meeting the city council agreed that at a future study session they would consider undertaking a process of having a focused conversation with St. Louis Park residents about the role of civic expressions in our work, including the Pledge of Allegiance, and how to best express our values and principals in order to create a more engaging civic space for all of our neighbors."
