RussianĀ hackers took the websites of at least 13 airportsĀ across the United States on Monday (October 10),Ā NBC NewsĀ reported.
The Russian hacker group "Killnet" claimed responsibility for the cyberattack, listing 49 targets in a Telegram channel viewed byĀ NBC News.
While the distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attack prevented people from accessing the websites, it did not impact operations at any of the targeted airports.
"The service interruption was limited to portions of the public-facing FlyLAX.com website only. No internal airport systems were compromised, and there were no operational disruptions," a spokesperson for the airport said.
A senior government official toldĀ ABC NewsĀ thatĀ the DDoS attacks are nothing more than an "inconvenience."
The attackers also took down the travel websites for several cities and states, including Chicago and Hawaii.
Last week, Killnet successfullyĀ took down the websites of several state governments, including Colorado and Kentucky, using similar methods. While Kentucky.gov was only offline for a short time, it took over a day for Colorado.gov to be restored.
