Walnut Ridge Closes Door on Chillicothe's Tourney Season

The Walnut Ridge Scots have not lost all year on their home floor, and continued their home court advantage with a 66-37 win over the Chillicothe Cavaliers in a Central District Division One sectional final, Friday.

-

The Scots proved to be the most athletic match up the Cavs have seen all year. Quickness, ball hawking, and an inside rotation of three 6’5” players gave the Scots a very tough match up for Chillicothe.

-

Walnut Ridge came out hot hitting 6 of their first 8 shots and 5 of 6 foul shots to go up 19-7 after one quarter. Jayvon Maughmer provided an offensive spark scoring 10 of the Cavaliers 16 first half points, but WR built a 34-16 halftime lead and never looked back.

-

Chillicothe adjusted to the Scots quickness and offense in the second half but the Scots lead was just too large to overcome. Chillicothe hit only 13-36 shots for 36% and were frigid from the three point line knocking down only 2 of 17 long range shots.

-

Walnut Ridge was 25-45 from the field and 3 of 8 on three point shooting. The Scots only turned the ball over 7 times compared to 14 turnovers for the Cavs.

-

Ridge was led by the inside scoring of Von Cameron Davis with 20 and the hoop driving Qian Magwood who knifed to the bucket for 19 points. Walnut Ridge is now (19-4) on the year headed to the District Semi Finals next week.

-

Maughmer led the Cavaliers with 16 and Brandon Noel scored 11 in the second half to wind up with 13 points.

-

Chillicothe winds up (17-6) on the year with a second consecutive FAC championship. The future is extremely bright as Maughmer, Noel, and Tre Beard (all averaged double figures) return next year for their senior seasons along with junior starter Vincent Roper.

-

Coach Eric Huffer loses only seniors Chris Postage, J’Quan Harris, and Josh Howard.
