House Bill Would Extend Time for Learners' Driving Permits

New drivers in Ohio may see an increase in the time they hold a learner's permit.

State Representatives Gary Scherer, of Circleville and Michael Sheehy , of Oregon, are backing the bill which would see drivers under the age of 18 to hold a learner's permit for one year instead of six months.

Probationary permit holders would not be allowed to drive from 9 p.m. to 6 a.m. unless they're accompanied by a parent or guardian.

Backers of the bill, including the PTA and AAA, hope for House approval after the November election. That would send the measure to the Ohio Senate.
