More Information Released on Pike County Officer Involved Shooting

The Franklin County Sheriff’s Office is releasing more information in regard to an officer-involved shooting in Pike County from last week.

The Pike County Sheriff’s Office requested assistance from a Franklin County Sheriff’s SWAT Team in a stand-off last Wednesday, June 13th at 919 Wynn Road in Piketon.

Pike County deputies were attempting to execute arrest warrants for David Brian Arthur, 44, on charges including drug trafficking, drug possession.

Five Pike County Sheriff’s deputies were greeted at the door of the home by Barry Leeth, 56, who led officers to Arthur’s location inside. The deputies quickly exited the home and established positions outside the residence on suspicion that Arthur was armed. That’s when the Franklin County SWAT Team was called in to assist.

Once attempts to negotiate with Arthur failed, chemical munitions were then deployed into the home by SWAT members. Gunfire then erupted from inside the residence, which was returned by SWAT Team members.

Both Arthur and Leeth were fatally wounded during the exchange. An assault rifle, handgun and 12 gauge shotgun were found near Arthur’s body. The entire standoff lasted for around six hours.

The Franklin County Sheriff's Office and Ohio BCI continue to investigate at the request of Pike County Sheriff, Charles Reader.
