The Lady Cavs used their defense to set up a lead and defeated Portsmouth Thursday night 69-47.
“We jumped out to a 21 to 5 lead in first quarter because of our pressure that we were applying” said Cavs Coach Pat Beard. “The downside to that is that we got into some early foul trouble that forced some of the younger girls in the game faster than I anticipated.”
Combined, the Cavs outscored East Clinton and Portsmouth 46-5 in the first quarter Wednesday and Thursday nights. They led the Trojans 41-21 at the half.
Beard says Portsmouth didn’t let the Cavs completely run away saying in the second half “it was the Peyton Williams show for the Trojans. She is very strong and a tremendous basketball player. We did a pretty good job on her on first half but she took over in the second half.”
Shay Lett paced the Cavs with 19points and Jasmine Jordan tallied 17. Essence Devlin, Bri Dawes and Osh Brown all chipped in with 9 points each.
Lett and Dawes both had 7 steals, Osh had 9rebs and Lett grabbed seven more.
Chillicothe (8-10) forced Portsmouth into 35 turnovers on the night.
“Our younger kids were able to get some more valuable minutes tonight” added Beard, “which will help as we get ready for last few games and tourney time”.
The Cavs also learned their postponed game with Ironton has been re-scheduled for Thursday February 6th at Hatton Gym. The two schools will have a shortened JV game with the varsity game beginning around 7pm.
