Piketon Man Charged After Non-Fatal Shooting of Girlfriend

A Piketon man is facing charges after a non-fatal shooting Wednesday morning.

According to the Pike County Sheriff’s Office, deputies responded to the vicinity of 15221 State Route 772 around 7am November 30th after receiving a call that a woman had been shot in the neck by her boyfriend.

39-year-old Melody Bryant was found to have a single gunshot wound and was taken to Adena Pike for treatment.

Her boyfriend, 40-year-old Joseph James Scowden, said the shooting was accidental. Investigators say it took place inside the couple’s shared vehicle, though details were not provided in the news release.

Scowden was taken into custody and charged with felonious assault, improper handling of a firearm, and using weapons while intoxicated. The Sheriff’s release did not specify the woman's condition.

Sheriff Tracy Evans says the case will be presented to the next term of the Pike County Grand Jury.
