Serious Head-on Crash Jackson County

A serious two-vehicle injury crash closed a road in Jackson County for 2 1/2 hours Monday.

On January 8, 2018 at 4:37 PM, The Jackson Post of the Ohio State Highway Patrol received a call of a two vehicle injury crash that occurred on Finley Chapel Road about one mile west of Glen Roy Road.

On-scene investigators reported that a 2006 Subaru Outback was being driven westbound on Finely Chapel Road by 47 year old Sean Edstrom of Ray, Ohio. A 1998 Honda Accord was coming eastbound on Finley Chapel Road being operated by 45 year old Ryan Ervin of Wellston.

According to an eyewitness, the Edstrom vehicle was heading westbound at a high rate of speed and traveled left of center striking the Ervin vehicle head-on.

Ervin’s car went off the right side of the roadway over an embankment and Edstrom’s Subaru came to rest in the middle of the road.

The road was partially covered with slush and ice and the edge of the pavement could not easily be seen requiring special care to maintain safe travel.

Alcohol use is suspected with Edstrom. His seat belt was fastened in place although he was sitting on it and as a result he sustained serious injuries.

Ervin appeared to have had his safety belt on although the impact was so severe that he suffered serious injury to his legs.

Both Men were alone at the time of the crash and were transported to Holzer of Jackson by EMS. Later that evening they were transferred to Grant Medical Center by ground rather than flown due to the inclement weather conditions.

No charges have been filed at this time as the crash remains open pending further investigation.

Finley Chapel Road was closed for about two and one half hours during the investigation and clean-up. Also on scene were personnel from the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office, Coalton and Wellston Volunteer Fire Departments, and the Jackson County Emergency Medical Services.
