KABUL, Afghanistan (AP) - Five American special operations troops are dead after being ambushed by the Taliban in southern Afghanistan -- but it apparently wasn't the Taliban who killed them.

Officials say the special ops troops were mistakenly killed by a U.S. airstrike that had been called in to help them. Officials with VFW Post 9942 in Beaver, Ohio, confirmed 25-year-old Justin Helton, of Pike County, was among the soldiers who lost their lives.

With just months remaining before U.S. combat troops leave Afghanistan, this was one of the worst friendly-fire incidents involving U.S. and coalition troops since the start of the nearly 14-year war.
