Two lawsuits have since been filed against the now defunct First Med Incorporated.
Bertie County officials in North Carolina are pursing legal action claiming the closure is a breach of contract.
Another lawsuit, filed Tuesday in the U.S. District Court in Wilmington, North Carolina by a First Med worker from Toledo, Ohio seeks class-action status on behalf of those who suddenly found themselves without jobs.
The company, which employed over 2,500 people, operated under the names Life Ambulance, TransMed, and MedCorp. They claimed to have transported more than a half-million patients a year.
In Ohio, the company operated in larger cities like Columbus and in smaller communities including Chillicothe, Jackson and Portsmouth.
